Square Card payments

Take invoice payments online and at the counter

Connect your Square account for online invoice payments and Square Terminal checkout. Payment, refund and dispute updates return to BenchKey, keeping the invoice's payment history together.

A Square Terminal payment marks the invoice paid. Staff then change the ticket status to picked up.

Pair Square Terminal for counter payments

Collect by link or Square Terminal and let Square's payment updates record the result in BenchKey.

Online invoice payments
Customers follow the invoice's Square payment link to pay online through your shop's account.
Square Terminal at each location
Pair Square Terminal with its BenchKey location using a device code, then take card payments at the counter.
Payments and refunds stay connected
Square sends payment, refund and dispute updates to BenchKey. Repeated event notifications are ignored so the same update is not recorded again.

Setup steps

  1. 1

    Connect the shop's account

In Payments settings, open "Payment providers" and choose "Connect Square." Sign in to your shop's Square account and approve the connection.

  2. 2

    Select Square for payments

Check the connected merchant, Square location and account type. Confirm Square is selected under "Payment provider" and follow any connection prompt shown.

  3. 3

    Pair your Square Terminal

For counter payments, create a device code for the location. Enter it on Square Terminal, then refresh and assign the terminal.

Limits and exceptions

Supported countries
BenchKey supports Square payments for shops in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, France and Spain.
Matching currency
Your shop currency must match the currency supported for its country. Check the connected Square location before taking payments.
Account and terminal setup
Testing mode cannot take real payments. For counter payments, pair a Square Terminal with the correct BenchKey location.
Does BenchKey add a payment processing fee?

No. Payments use your own Square account at Square's normal rates. BenchKey adds no markup, and Square bills its own processing fees.

Which BenchKey plans include Square?

Standard, Pro and Business all include the Square payment connection. You still need your own Square account.

Which Square hardware can I use at the counter?

BenchKey supports Square Terminal, paired with a BenchKey location. Each location needs its terminal paired before it can take payments through the connection.

What happens if Square sends a payment update again?

BenchKey ignores duplicate event notifications. A repeated notification does not create another payment entry for the same event.
